Valerie Bertinelli . . . She's Back

Valerie Bertinelli and Eddie Van Halen Divorce
When I heard that these two finally made their seven-year separation a permanent one, I thought this story would be the perfect way to start off my Babyboomer Flashback blog.

Bertinelli cited irreconcilable differences when she filed for divorce in December 2005. The couple were married in 1981 and have a 16-year old son, Wolfgang.

"The parties have resolved all their issues amicably in mediation," say the documents, released on Friday, December 21. "Neither spouse shall take unfair advantage of the other spouse."

The two met in 1980, when the "One Day at a Time" actress went backstage after a Van Halen concert in Shreveport, La.

Valerie starred in the TV series "One Day at a Time" and "Touched by An Angel." She is currently a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig, recently went public about her weight battle and is writing a memoir called "Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time."

I digress, but must say this . . . what a rude title for an article . . . goes to show you how the media treats those who are unfortunate and have a weight problem in this mocking and critical society . . . it gives impressionable teens wanting to fit in the impression it is more attractive to look like you are a half dead anorexic fashion model, a young adult needing rehab is cool that is socially acceptable and dressing like a slut at 12 years old is an awesome thing. What a joke we are as a collective society . . . or maybe I'm just too old-fashioned?

In my opinion, Valerie was an awesome role model as a teenager back in day when she was so popular on "One Day At A Time" while in contrast, Mackenzie Phillips was in and out of rehab. At the time, I don't remember her weight being an issue as it would be today.

She is one of those celebrities that seems like a real person to me. While I realize that all celebrities are real human beings, Valerie seems to be a genuinely down to earth person, not a fake or phony Hollywood type . . . the girl next door.

Eddie Van Halen and his band, Van Halen, have sold 80 million albums worldwide . . . between his guitar licks and David Lee Roth's flamboyant stage style, the band stayed on the top of the charts . . . Sammy Hagar took over on vocals when David left the band. Van Halen is currently on a reunion tour.

Through the years, I've heard the tabloid news reports of Eddie going in and out of drug rehab and as I heard that she was standing by her man, my heart went out to her for what she must have gone through with him. When you think about it, she put her career aside to be a wife and mom . . . I often wondered how often she kicked herself with regret for doing that.

When I saw her first commercial for Jenny Craig, I thought to myself . . . she's back . . . you go girl. She came back into the public eye as if to say, "here I am, there are things about myself that I'm not happy with and I'm doing something about it."

Then I started seeing the blogs pop up ridiculing her for "coming out" as a fat girl after being America's sweetheart on One Day At A Time. It goes to show you where our mentality is as a society.

Maybe the teenagers of today will pay attention to Valerie's story and allow her to be a role model . . . a beautiful, honest woman who is real and true to herself . . . welcome back Valerie . . . you rock, even without Eddie . . .
