The Money Pit . . . Humorous Absurdities

When it comes to the humorous absurdities of life, the movie The Money Pit brings to life the saying “If it sounds too good to be true . . . it probably is.”

Walter and Anna (Tom Hanks and Shelly Long) make the leap into real estate, but encounter mayhem when their dream home starts falling apart before their eyes . . . one humorous absurdity after another. One of my favorite movies of all time . . .

From the moment Walter and Anna move in the house, they quickly realize the "if it sounds too good to be true" mentality as one thing after another happens. The entire front door frame rips out of the wall, the staircase collapses, the plumbing is full of gunk, the electrical system catches fire, the bathtub crashes through the floor, the chimney collapses, and a raccoon has invaded the dumbwaiter.

The resulting saga of the four-month renovation and the antics of the contractors, along with the storyline of Anna's relationship with her former husband are all a hilarious look at life not going well . . .

The Money Pit is a 1986 comedy film and remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. Directed by Richard Benjamin and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the film stars Tom Hanks as Walter Fielding Jr., an entertainment industry lawyer and Shelley Long as Anna Crowley, a violist.

Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, The Money Pit has become a comedy classic. Goes to show you . . . don't rely on the opinion of reviewers who may not share your likes and dislikes. The Money Pit is one of the most awesome movies of all time . . . in my opinion.

A digression . . . the mention of Richard Benjamin (who always seemed to play a geeky character) takes me back to the movie "Goodbye Columbus" with Richard and Ali McGraw sitting at the dinner table with his family being very serious and proper while Ali is grabbing him under the table. Loved that movie too . . .
